Feel Great: Quit Smoking

New information shows that smoking causes dieseases in nearly every organ of the body. It is linked to leukemia, cataracts, pneumonia, and cancers of the cervix, lung, kidney, pancreas, and stomach.

Additionally, another study shows that secondhand smoke in the home increases the risk of behavioral problems in boys with asthma. For each doubling of secondhand smoke exposure, boys showed a twofold increase in behavioral problems such as hyperactivity, aggression, and depression. (You can read more about the effects of secondhand smoking at
healthday.com.)

Lung cancer alone claims the lives of more women than any other cancer. Stok smoking to lower your changes of getting these deseases and you can expect these results . . . . .
  • 20 minutes after quitting - Your blood pressure drops and the temperature in your hands and feet rises.
  • 8 hours after quitting - The carbon monoxice in your blood drops to normal.
  • 24 hours after quitting - Your change of having a heart attach goes down
  • 2 days after quitting - You can taste and smell things better.
  • 2 weeks to 3 months after quitting - You have better circulation and your lungs are working better.
  • 1-9 months after quitting - Coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, and shortness of breath decreases. Your lungs start to function better, lowering your risk of lung infection.
  • 1 year after quitting - Your risk of heart disease is half that of a smoker's.
  • 5 years after quitting - Your risk of having a stroke is the same as someone who doesn't smoke.
  • 10 years after quitting - Your risk of dying from lung cancer is half that of a smoker's. Your risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas also decreases.
  • 15 years after quitting - Your risk of heart diesease is now the same as someone who doesn't smoke.
